Exclusive: ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ EPs Discuss Season 2 Finale and Future
The second season of 'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' wrapped production in Toronto, and TrekMovie had the opportunity to speak with co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, as well as series creator Gaia Violo, about the season 2 finale and their hopes for the show's future. The cast also provided some clues about the upcoming season.
The season 2 finale ends with a shocking twist, leaving fans eager for more.
In an interview, actress Bella Shepard (Genesis Lythe) described the season 2 finale as 'bittersweet' due to the cast's uncertainty about the show's future. Noga Landau confirmed that the finale was written with a different path in mind, stating, 'Absolutely not. We have so much story to tell. If anything – yeah, it is not the end.' Gaia Violo added, 'It’s such a shocking ending, you do not want it to [end] – no, no!'
The team remains optimistic about the show's future, with Landau mentioning that they don't know if they'll get a third season but are hopeful. If the show doesn't get a third season and ends on a cliffhanger, the producers might be able to negotiate a resolution. Kurtzman successfully did this for 'Star Trek: Discovery' by adding a short coda to the season 5 finale.
While details about season 2 are scarce, some hints have emerged. Paul Giamatti confirmed that his character, Nus Braka, won't appear in season 2, and actor Karim Diané (Jay-Den Kraag) described the season as 'wild,' suggesting a significant shift in the narrative. Tig Notaro, who played Commander Reno, will also return, but in a recurring role rather than a series regular.
The cast and crew are excited about the upcoming season, with Bella Shepard wearing a new red uniform and Darem Reymi (George Hawkins) sporting a new pin. The season 2 finale is expected to be released on Paramount+ after the first season finale drops on March 12.
