Get ready, Marvel fans! Simu Liu, our beloved Shang-Chi, is back in the MCU, and things have changed. But how has the Master of Martial Arts evolved since we last saw him in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings back in 2021? Let's dive in.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to be a reunion of sorts, bringing together familiar faces from the past, present, and potentially even the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While some heroes have been frequent guests on our screens, others, like Shang-Chi, have been taking a break. Now, he's ready to step back into the spotlight, possibly as a member of Captain America's Avengers.
In a recent interview, Simu Liu gave us a glimpse into Shang-Chi's transformation. When asked about his character's evolution, considering the time jump, Liu shared, "I think time. He’s older. I think I’m older, so getting to bring a little bit more of a quality of self-assurance is always great, especially because Shang was such a fish out of water." He added, "There’s a little bit of a jump in time, so I think we’ll meet him at a place where he’s feeling a little more lived in with who he is and his responsibilities." It sounds like Shang-Chi has grown, both as a hero and as a person.
But here's where it gets controversial... Liu is being extra cautious about what he reveals about Avengers: Doomsday. He humorously recounted a past experience where a simple comment about his costume turned into a media frenzy. "I never know when something I say is going to get picked up into a soundbite," he explained. "I think I was freezing cold on the rooftop of the Empire State Building, and they were like, 'What about his costume?' And I was like, 'Oh, it’s new.' It just became an unstoppable maelstrom of messed-up lines. I am very reserved about what to say about it now."
Even the slightest hint from the cast can set the internet ablaze. Remember when Nightcrawler actor Alan Cumming got into hot water with Marvel Studios just for teasing a potential battle? The anticipation for Avengers: Doomsday is clearly high.
While a direct sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings doesn't seem to be a top priority for Marvel Studios, the character is likely to play a supporting role in future MCU projects. It's worth noting that the 2021 film earned a respectable $432 million worldwide, especially considering the pandemic's impact on moviegoing.
The Russo Brothers, known for their work on the Avengers and Captain America franchises, are directing Avengers: Doomsday. They're collaborating with Stephen McFeely and Michael Waldron on the screenplay. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, with Avengers: Secret Wars following on December 17, 2027.
