A mouthwatering tale of BBQ and football destiny unfolds!
Exactly a year ago, the NFL Draft's fourth pick decision led Mike Vrabel and the Patriots to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where they met the talented offensive tackle, Will Campbell.
Their first encounter over a four-and-a-half-hour BBQ dinner set the stage for a lasting bond. Campbell, eager to impress, took Vrabel and his team to his favorite spot, Phils, a local gem known for its char-grilled oysters and LSU memorabilia.
"The meal was excellent, a true Baton Rouge experience," Vrabel recalled. But it was more than just a meal; it was a chance to connect and build trust.
And connect they did! Campbell's desire to join the Patriots was evident, but the real test came later during an intense on-field workout. Vrabel, in a bold move, put Campbell through his paces, and the tackle didn't disappoint, driving Vrabel to the ground.
"Will made his intentions clear during that visit," Vrabel said. "He wanted to be a Patriot, and we wanted him too."
The Patriots drafted Campbell fourth overall, and he lived up to the hype, starting 16 games as a rookie. Despite an MCL injury that kept him out for five games, Campbell returned stronger, starting every playoff game since. Now, he's gearing up for the Super Bowl against the Seahawks.
But here's where it gets interesting... Campbell's relationship with Vrabel has only grown stronger throughout the season.
"Playing for Vrabel has been an incredible experience," Campbell shared. "I feel so grateful to be part of this team and the bonds we've formed. It's been the most enjoyable football season since high school."
