Gavin Stone's shoulder woes: a setback for the Dodgers' rotation plans.
Shoulder discomfort has sidelined Gavin Stone, a right-handed pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and it's a concern for the team's upcoming season.
Manager Dave Roberts shared the news with reporters, revealing that Stone, who missed the entire 2025 season due to shoulder surgery, is now facing another setback. The surgery, a complex procedure involving the labrum, capsule, and rotator cuff, kept him out for the entire 2025 season.
But here's where it gets controversial... Stone had a promising start to spring training, pitching a perfect inning with two strikeouts. However, a subsequent bullpen session revealed a flare-up in his shoulder, prompting the team to shut him down from throwing. While there's no structural damage indicated, the precaution is understandable given his health history.
Stone's performance in 2024 hinted at a promising future. He maintained a 3.53 earned run average across 140 1/3 innings, showcasing an ability to limit walks and hard contact. He was on track to be a solid mid-rotation pitcher.
The Dodgers' plan to start the season with a six-man rotation adds to the intrigue. Stone had a good chance to secure a spot, but his injury opens up opportunities for others. Blake Snell, another pitcher dealing with arm fatigue, is also unlikely to be ready for the season opener.
The top four spots in the rotation are expected to be occupied by Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tyler Glasnow, Shohei Ohtani, and Roki Sasaki. Ohtani's participation in the World Baseball Classic and potential pitch count restrictions add an extra layer of complexity. Emmet Sheehan, who was delayed by illness, is also in the mix and could secure a rotation spot.
This leaves one rotation spot up for grabs. River Ryan, who missed 2025 due to Tommy John surgery, is back to full health this spring. Justin Wrobleski, a left-handed pitcher, could start or work out of the bullpen. Landon Knack, a depth starter, has struggled in his first two spring training outings. Cole Irvin, a veteran southpaw, is also in camp as a non-roster invitee.
Kyle Hurt, another right-hander, is not in the rotation mix according to Roberts. The Dodgers view him as a reliever capable of working multiple innings. Hurt, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2024, has impressed early in camp, striking out six batters in his first three appearances. He's currently vying for an Opening Day bullpen spot.
