A Tale of an Unlikely Hero: How a 10kg Rabbit Became My Lifesaver
Imagine a furry, four-legged guardian angel, weighing in at a whopping 10kg, who saved your life. This is the incredible story of Dory, a Flemish giant rabbit, and her unique bond with her owner.
It was a fateful day at TruckFest in 2002 when I first laid eyes on these majestic creatures. Among the chaos of stalls, I stumbled upon a tent housing the largest rabbits I'd ever seen. Little did I know, one of these gentle giants would become my savior.
Dory, a baby rabbit at the time, was already larger than life. We brought her home, but she quickly outgrew her cat carrier. By the time she reached adulthood, she weighed almost 10kg, and I was walking her on a leash, just like a dog!
Her appetite matched her size. We fed her an abundance of carrots, but that was just the beginning. White cabbage, savoy cabbage, hay, dandelions, milk thistle, and pellets - she devoured it all. And when she wasn't munching on veggies, she'd find other creative ways to satisfy her hunger, often chewing through household items like computer cables and furniture.
But it was Dory's intelligence that truly set her apart. One evening in 2004, as I watched TV with my then-wife, I began to slip into a diabetic coma, a potentially life-threatening situation. My ex-wife, unaware of the severity, thought I had simply nodded off. However, Dory, the observant soul she was, sensed danger.
Normally a calm and docile creature, Dory sprang into action. She climbed onto my body, jumping and thumping furiously on my chest, and licking my face frantically. It was her unusual behavior that alerted my ex-wife, who then called for emergency services.
How did Dory know? Some believe pets have an innate ability to sense illness or even death. Perhaps she could detect the drop in my blood sugar or the rapid change in my heartbeat. Whatever the reason, her actions that night were nothing short of heroic.
In the aftermath of my coma, Dory became an unexpected celebrity. Local and national newspapers featured her story, and even morning TV shows wanted an interview. However, when producers couldn't accommodate a giant house rabbit in London, we politely declined.
As a token of gratitude, Dory was honored as the first-ever animal member of the Rabbit Welfare Association. She spent her remaining years enjoying an endless supply of carrots and computer cables, living the life she deserved.
Sadly, Dory's life was cut short at just two years old. While the marks she left on the carpet and skirting boards served as physical reminders, it was the impact she had on me that truly mattered. Dory lived a full life, and I strive to honor her memory every day.
And this is the part most people miss... Dory's story challenges our perceptions of what it means to be a hero. It reminds us that sometimes, the most unexpected creatures can have the biggest impact on our lives. So, the next time you see a rabbit, remember Dory - the 10kg furry friend who saved a life.
