Prendergast is acutely aware of the honor bestowed upon him as he prepares to lead the team out of the new Clan Stand, in front of a record-breaking crowd of 12,500, against Leinster at Dexcom Stadium on Saturday.
Prendergast, a 25-year-old Kildare native, candidly admits he didn't fully grasp the magnitude of this opportunity when he first joined. He reflects on his evolving understanding of the unique culture and spirit of Connacht Rugby and the west of Ireland:
"I'm still discovering how incredible this place is and how special the people are. The west of Ireland has its own distinct character. It's a privilege I'll never take for granted, and I'll always strive to embody the region's history and values. We want to deliver a performance that resonates with our supporters and makes them proud."
The upcoming match carries an extra layer of responsibility for the selected 23 players. Prendergast emphasizes the importance of this game and the impact it has on the entire province and its supporters:
"It's a privilege for the 23 players who get to play in this game, but with that comes a responsibility to the team, the province, and our fans worldwide. The Clan Stand comes alive during interpro matches, and our supporters thrive on seeing a Connacht team that fights, does the gritty work, and then showcases our style of rugby. We want to give them a performance to remember."
Despite Leinster's recent 52-17 victory over Connacht in the URC, Prendergast remains optimistic. He attributes their belief to the strength of the squad, the coaching staff, and the leadership of Stuart Lancaster. As for hosting his parents this weekend, he playfully avoids confirmation. He reflects on the dream of playing against his brother at this level, a privilege they both cherish:
"Whether he plays or not, I don't know, and he doesn't know if I'm playing. Competing with your sibling at the highest level is something we'll always appreciate and never take for granted."
